In his next letter, written on the first day of January, sandwiched in-between greetings for the goyischen new year, complaints about the mosquitos, his impressions of the pyramids and the ‘embarras de richesse’ of Cairo, Schechter shared additional news of his forays into two genizot:

I was back at the Genizah and brought a big sack of fragments. The Genizah is so large and it contains so much rubbish and printed matter that I have to forego any selection. I take all that is MS. Two people work for me, the Beadel and some Arab. Of course, I give enough bakshish. Next Tuesday I will get some things again. The examination will have to take place at home first. M. G. H. [Mitt Gottes Hilfe] I will find some good things. My main occupation next week will be the second Genizah, which I am very curious about because it seems that it has hardly been touched so far.
